Members of the 509th Composite Group, the unit that dropped the atomic bombs during WWII, visited the Udvar-Hazy Center during their 2005 reunion in Washington, D.C. The unit was activated in Dec. 17, 1944, and deployed to Tinian in the Marianas in May 1945. The men posed with the B-29 superfortress Enola Gay, the first aircraft to drop an atomic bomb. Among the group shown here is the navigator on the Enola Gay’s historic flight, Capt. Theodore J. Van Kirk.
