    The Columbia represents one of the most monumental milestones in the history of flight: the first visit by human beings to the surface of another world. In 1969, Columbia carried astronauts Armstrong, Collins, and Aldrin to the Moon and back during their historic mission. It epoxy-resin ablative heat shield protected it from the 5,000 °F temperatures during its reentry through Earth’s atmosphere.
