Dr. Thomas Watters of the National Air and Space Museum’s Center for Earth and Planetary Studies is a participating scientist on the MESSENGER (Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry, and Ranging) team. In this capacity, he was involved in the discovery of a previously unknown large impact basin. MESSENGER is a NASA-sponsored scientific investigation of the planet Mercury and the first space mission designed to orbit the planet closest to the Sun. In this photo, Watters is seen with a model of the MESSENGER spacecraft.
