Scientists in the Museum's Center for Earth and Planetary Studies (CEPS) are conducting research in Arizona funded through NASA’s Lunar Science Institute. Their goal is to employ Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) systems to characterize geologic settings on the Earth that may be similar to those found on the Moon. In the photo is Dr. Kevin Williams, formerly of CEPS, and now at Buffalo St. University (SUNY), with whom the team worked in January 2010. Williams is pulling the box containing the radar antenna, from which radar waves are sent into the ground and then received, after reflecting off features in the subsurface.
