This image of Venus was taken at 3 o'clock in the afternoon on October 1, using the Public Observatory's 16 inch Boller & Chivens telescope. In this image, Venus is a thin waning crescent. Venus has phases much like the moon. At different points of Venus' orbit around the Sun, we can see varying amounts of the half of the Venus that is illuminated by the Sun. When Venus goes between us and the Sun, we won't be able to see any of Venus' daytime side, and it will be a "new Venus."
