This image of the Sun's chromosphere was taken with a hydrogen-alpha telescope at 1:26 pm EDT on Wednesday, June 1.
This image shows a fairly active Sun. The remnants of a moderate-sized solar flare can be seen in an active region in the lower left. Dark lines of lifted solar gas, called filaments, can be seen on the disk of the Sun. Filaments seen in profile are known as prominences and are found around the limb of the Sun.
