Arthur Altman was born in New York City in 1937 and was raised in Chicago area where he spent his entire life. Arthur went to University of Illinois in Chicago at Navy Pier in the 1950s and subsequently attended University of Illinois Medical School in Chicago. Dr. Altman served in the US Air Force from 1963 to 1965 and his first son Jeffrey Altman was born at Travis Air Force Base. Dr. Altman returned to Chicago and had another son David and a daughter Ruth and had a successful dermatology practice in Arlington Heights for many years before retiring with his wife Susan to Evanston Illinois.
