August Belmont started flying general aviation aircraft in 1956, at the age of 17. He obtained his private pilot's license in 1959. During his 20's and early 30's he took up soaring, and obtained his Altitude and Flight to a Goal (300 km) FAI "Diamonds" in 1969 and 1971.
In his late 30's August went back to powered flying, obtaining his commercial license and instrument rating. He built and flew ultralights, and, in 1986, purchased a stock 1939 65 hp Piper J-3 Cub. Over the next ten years he flew the Cub on numerous record breaking flights for this kind of airplane, including circumnavigating the Caribbean Sea and flying to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.
By age 60 August had flown over 2500 hours in 50 aircraft types, including 10 sailplane types and 5 ultralight types.
