    Mr. Lopes is a native of Honolulu, Hawaii. In 1944, while assigned to the USS Cowpens, he participated in naval air operations against Tokyo, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. In 1945, while based aboard the USS Independence, he participated in over twenty-five fighter sweeps and carrier strikes in the Pacific theater.

    Following World War II he married Virginia Walker of Portland, Oregon. Together they raised seven children. Mr. Lopes retired after 30 years of work in California and Hawaii for the electronics industry.
