Bruce, Barbara and Robert Arnold are a family with deep roots in the history of flight. Bruce (1918-1992) was the son of aviation pioneer General Henry "Hap" Arnold. Barbara (1922-1996) was the only daughter of aircraft designer/builder Donald W. Douglas, Sr., the founder of the Douglas Aircraft Company.
Bruce Arnold was a graduate of the Military Academy at West Point (1943) and later moved to the United States Air Force after serving in the Army's Pacific Campaign during World War II. He then had a long and distinguished career in the Ballistic Missile program and other technology projects for the Air Force. Bruce retired with the rank of Colonel in 1973.
Barbara was a graduate of the University of Southern California and was active her entire life in a series of community and national charitable and public service activities including the design of the Air Force Memorial located in Virginia near the Pentagon. An active sportswoman, Barbara was well known in the Washington Area as a competitive player in Tennis and Golf Tournaments frequently bringing home trophies and awards.
Their son, Robert (1951-), a graduate of the University of Denver, MA from the University of Southern California, is a businessman who now grows wine grapes on the Arnold Family Ranch in Sonoma, California. Robert succeeded his Mother on the Site and Design Committee of the Air Force Memorial Foundation and is a Trustee of the Falcon Foundation at the United States Air Force Academy.
