Bruce served his country during WW II as a B-17 pilot in the 749th Bomb Squadron, 457th Bomb Group, 92nd Wing, 3rd Division of the 8th Air Force at Glatton, England. As an engineer who graduated from NC State University, he worked on space programs for McDonnell-Douglas, such as he Saturn 4B Rocket and the Manned Orbiting Lab.
