    August Schmidt entered the United States Army in June 1941 as a first Lieutenant, Coast Artillery. He accompanied the 2nd Battalion, 214th Coast Artillery to the Asiatic Pacific Theatre where he participated in the Guadalcanal Campaign. In June 1943 he returned to the United States to attend flight training. Upon completion of advanced pilot training he departed for Italy with the 829th Bombardment squadron, 485th Bombardment Group where he participated in the North Apennines Campaign. Captain Schmidt was killed 3 March 1945 while on a combat mission. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Air Medal, Army Aviator Badge and a number of service and campaign medals. In 1965, he was further honored when the U. S. Army Reserve Training Center in Sinton, Texas was dedicated to his memory.
