    Charles Barnard was born and grew up in Ventura, California. His love of aviation began at age 12 with a ride in a Ford Tri-motor.

    His career with United Airlines began January 1943 on the first all metal airplane, the Boeing 247, and ended as a captain on the Boeing 747 flying to Honolulu. In between he flew the DC2, DC3, DC4, DC6, DC7, DC8, and DC10. In addition he flew the Boeing 377 Stratocruiser, The Boeing 720 as well as the Boeing 747, and The Convair 340. In almost 39 years with United and with over 30,000 hours of flight time, he never damaged an airplane.
