    Captain Dean E. Sloan began his naval career in 1961. Upon completing naval aviation school in Pensacola, Florida, he was assigned to Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron VAW-13 as an electronic countermeasures officer in the EA-1F aircraft. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam.

    In 1965, Captain Sloan left the cockpit and entered the classroom as a Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) instructor at the University of Michigan. Following this tour, he served from 1968 through 1970 as the electronic warfare officer with Commander, Carrier Division Four in Virginia Beach, Virginia. During this time he completed deployments aboard the USS Independence and the USS Forrestal. In 1970, he reported to the Fleet Anti-Air Warfare Training Center in Dam Neck, VA, as the training evaluation and analysis officer.

    In 1972, Captain Sloan was assigned to the Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron VAQ-129 at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. While at Whidbey, he served as maintenance and operations officer with Electronic Attack Squadron VAQ-131, deployed aboard the USS Constellation, and as the electronic warfare training officer for the Commander Medium Attack Tactical Electronic Warfare Wing Pacific. In 1977, while still assigned at NAS Whidbey, Captain Sloan become the executive officer of the VAQ-136 and later assumed the role of commanding officer of the VAQ-136 Gauntlets.

    Captain Sloan continued his career in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations as the electronic warfare projects officer. In 1982, he was chosen to attend the National War College and further developed his expertise in electronic warfare countermeasures. He was then assigned to the Joint Chiefs of Staff where he served until 1986.

    Following this tour of duty, he reentered the classroom as the commanding officer of the Naval ROTC unit at the University of Mississippi. Many of the young men and women who were members of this unit went on to serve in Operation Desert Storm. Captain Sloan completed his career as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Recruit, Specified, Reserve and International Training at the Naval Air Station, Millington, Tennessee.
