    Captain George Simmons entered the Army Air Forces in September 1942 and was discharged in February 1946. He was a fighter pilot with the 340th Squadron, 348th Group, 5th Army Air Force during World War II. He flew 108 combat missions in P41s and P51s in New Guinea, Leyte, Luzon and Ieshima in 1944 and 1945.

    He flew for United Airlines from 1952 to 1983, beginning as a co-pilot on DC-3s in May 1952. He retired as a DC-10 captain in June 1983. He flew the DC-3, CV-340, DC-4, DC-6a and 6b, DC-7, DC-8, Viscount, B-720, B-727, B-747, and DC-10.
