Captain Grant C. Young served nearly 30 years in the U. S. Navy a period that embraced WW II and the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. Serving initially as an enlisted man, he went through Navy -flight school in 1942/43, won his Navy wings, and subsequently flew carrier based torpedo bombers in WW II, dive bombers and prop fighters between wars, and jet fighters during the Korean War. He operated in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and several of the "Seven Seas" and held an aircraft carrier squadron command. He served in ship's company in two large carriers. Significant shore assignments included tours of duty on the staffs of the Chief of Naval Operations and Commander Fleet Air, Jacksonville, FL, and as a test pilot at the U. S. Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, MD. In connection with wartime combat actions he was awarded the Navy Cross, seven Air Medals, two Navy Commendation Medals and the Purple Heart Medal in addition to numerous combat theater and campaign medals and ribbons.
