    Hugh began flying during high school in 1947 at Anahuac Texas in a J-3 Cub. He joined the U.S. Aviation Cadet program upon graduation from college, in 1952. Serving in the Air Force, his last assignment was Aircraft Commander on the Boeing KC-97 refueling tanker. Upon discharge, he was accepted at United Airlines Flight Engineer Class in May 1956. A successful career of thirty five years ended in normal retirement at age 60, flying Captain on the Douglas DC-10. Aircraft flown during his career were the J3-Cub, T-6, B-25, B-29, KC_97, CV-340, DC-6, DC-7, B-720, B-727, and DC-10.
