Enlisted in the US Naval Reserve as an aviation cadet in 1936, graduated from flight training at Naval Air Station Pensacola in 1937. Served in fleet duties up to retirement after 25 years of service as a Regular Navy captain in 1961. While still in the Navy he developed an interest in lapidary arts, and in retirement became a mineralogy and gemology expert. He was the author of many books on the subject.
