    At the time of Pearl Harbor, John transferred from the National Guard Field Artillery to aviation cadets and received his wings in Class 43C from La Junta, CA. He was shot down July 14, 1943 over France on his third bomber run in a B-17. He walked out of France with help from the underground and was sent back to England hidden under floor boards of a fishing boat on Nov 1, 1943. He received the English Walking Boot for escaping and evading the enemy.

    He was an instructor on B-17s until August 1945. He flew for United Airlines for 36 years and retired in August 1981.
