    Capt. Crawford was born in rural Illinois. In 1950 he started flying lessons at age 15. In 1958 he was hired by the Illinois State Police and in 1959 started flying for them when they purchased patrol planes . he was hired by United Airlines in 1961. He flew DC-6, DC-7, Vickers Viscount, Boeing727, Douglas DC-10, and finished his career flying 747-400 to the Far East, Australia and New Zealand. Loel continued in general aviation throughout his career and after his retirement from United in 1995, owned a 1941 WACO biplane for over 31 years. Other aircraft was WWI Advanced Trainer AT-6 Plus various other light aircraft over the years. Moved to the mountains of eastern Tennessee for retirement where he and wife Cynthia, also a pilot have a hangar and live on Norris Lake.
