    Began to fly in 1935 in Ann Arbor, MI and had a flying permit by 1938. He was a flying 2nd Lt in the Civil Air Patrol in December 1941. He entered the Army Air Forces in early 1942 and was a multi-engine pilot. He flew DC-3s and C-47s during World War II in CONUS and the European Theater.

    He was further rated on glider CG4A, and he piloted a glider behind the enemy lines in Germany (on the Rhine Crossing "Varsity"). Enemy sniper fire killed two of the five occupants after exiting the glider and this Honoree was wounded by the sniper(s). He is the recipient of the Purple Heart, Air Medal, European-African Campaign Medal with three battle stars and the Bronze Arrow Head. He has been awarded several other military service medals.

    He is a holder of the Silver Beaver award in the Boy Scouts of America. He is the recipient of the South Central Florida Air Force Association Major Thomas B. McGuire Citation.
