Captain Sotolongo started his airline career with Overseas National Airways. He has flown for Saturn Airways, Hawaiian Airlines, Trans International Airlines, North Central Airlines, Republic Airlines, and finally Northwest Airlines.

He has flown transport-type aircraft from Lockheed, Convair, McDonnell Douglas, Boeing, and Airbus. He spent thirteen years as an instructor and check airman. He also spent a number of years as Air Safety Chairman, member of the Air Line Pilots Association (Air Traffic Control Committee) and member of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators.
