Capt. Melin was a USMC combat veteran of Vietnam, where he flew UH-34 Helicopters, survived 3 crashes in the ocean and earned 23 Air medals. He continued his military service as a Captain in the Reserves, flying the C-119, before retiring in 1967 to join United Airlines. During his 33 year career with United, Capt. Melin flew the DC-3, DC-8, DC-10, 737 and 727. He retired as a 747 Captain in 2000.
