    Captain Van Nuise learned to fly in the Army ROTC flight training program as a student at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 1966. Entering active duty, he completed Artillery school and the Army fixed wing aviator school. He flew the L-19/O-1 in Vietnam on reconnaissance and artillery fire missions. His 33 year civilian career began with United Airlines in 1969 and included flying the B-737, B-727, B-757 and B-767 as well as serving as a Line Check Airman.
