    Captain Roger D. Bjornberg retired from United Airlines August 1999.

    Roger D. Bjornberg was born in New Haven, CT August 29, 1939, the 7th of 10 children. His dream in life was to become a pilot and the dream came true. His flying started when he was at North Haven High School in 1958.

    He joined the U.S. Navy in 1961 and was assigned to the VP 56 squadron of Norfolk, VA. They flew the Lockheed P2V Neptune aircraft. Their mission was anti-sub and search and rescue.

    Leaving the Navy in 1966, Roger followed his passion for aviation and was hired by United Airlines May 30,1966, the start of a 33 year career. HeI began in Washington, D.C. as a DC6 engineer out of National Airport, now the Reagan Washington National Airport. He was then promoted to co-pilot on a Viscount. After a transfer to NYC in 1969, he became a co-pilot on a Boeing 727 out of J.F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia, and Newark International Airports. In 1984, he moved to the DC 10. He was promoted to Captain in 1986 and was transferred to Chicago, flying the 727.

    In 1993 he started flying internationally on the Boeing 757 and 767 as a Captain out of Chicago. In 1996, he was promoted to the Boeing 777. Captain Bjornberg flew the "triple 7" out of Chicago and NYC and finally back to D.C, where it had all began in 1966. He flew his last year out of Washington Dulles International Airport.

    Captain Bjornberg's oldest son, Roger Jr. joined him for his last flight August 1999, to London, England. Fire trucks and celebration with family and friends greeted him on that final landing at Dulles.

    Captain Bjornberg now lives in Woodbury, CT and is often found enjoying his 1960 Chevy and boat wearing his United ball cap with the "scrambled eggs."
