Captain Sam Wiper flew for United Airlines from 1940 until retirement in 1973 except for three years during World War II when he served in the Army Air Corps in South America, Africa, and New Guinea.

He and his wife Lillian were married for 61 years until his death in 2000. He was the father of four children: Karen, Pamela, Craig, and Kevin.
