Sharon graduated with a degree in Mathematics from The University of California, Berkeley, during the time when engineering careers and piloting jobs at the airlines were effectively closed to women. Later, after raising two fine children, teaching high school math for 17 years, and enjoying flying as a hobby, she made a career change to United Air Lines at age 46. After flying a variety of aircraft, she retired in 2002 as captain of the Airbus A320, and remembers it as the most wonderful job anywhere.
