Capt. Whitten started his aviation career as a Navy V5 Enlistee. Received Navy wings in 1948 and entered the Navy Reserve in 1950. Recalled to Navy active duty in 1952. Returned to inactive Navy duty in 1954. After flying for Panuegra in South America, joined United Airlines in Oct. 1954 as a Flight Engineer. Became a Copilot in 1955 and made Capt. in 1965. Flew Convair Viscount, DC6/7 Caravelle, 727, DC-8, DC-10 and 747.
