Al Mencin was Executive Officer of Fighter Squadron VF-31 on the USS Cabot (CVL-28) in the South Pacific in 1944. He was designated an “ace” and received 2 Silver Stars and the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war he joined the Regular navy and retired after 28 years of service, mostly as a Fighter Squadron Commander.
