    Commander Augustine graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in civil engineering, and was commissioned in the Navy's Civil Engineering Corps (CEC). After he finished his three years with the CEC, he entered flight training at Pensacola naval Air Station, FL receiving his "wings of gold" in 1952. In 1962 he attended test pilot school at Patuxent River Naval Air Station, MD. In 1968 he attended the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA. In 1970 he was commanding officer of VA-86, a strike fighter squadron, and in 1971, he served as the squadron's commanding officer. He completed three tours of duty in Vietnam. In 1973 he died in an airplane crash while serving on the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CV-42) stationed in Greece.
