Robert N. Spencer was born on March 12, 1947 in Sioux City, IA to Neville R. and Darlene J. Spencer. Commissioned at Fort Benning, GA on May 2, 1968. Graduated from Rotary Wing Flight School at Fort Rucker, AL in June, 1969. Served in Vietnam from July, 1969 to September, 1971.
Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for Heroism on June 25, 1970 for actions completed on April 3, 1970, while flying for the 238th Aviation Company (Aerial Weapons) in Vietnam.
The citation reads: For heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: These men distinguished themselves by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commanders of helicopter gunships during an emergency insertion of infantry near Dak Seang. Despite poor weather conditions and hostile terrain, they repeatedly put themselves in a vulnerable position to draw fire away from the troop carrying helicopters and the friendly forces on the ground. Throughout the operation, they maneuvered their aircraft with skill and ability, using sound judgment in the neutralization of the numerous enemy positions. By their professionalism and exemplary valor, they were in great measure responsible for the successful completion of the dangerous mission. Their actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon themselves, their unit, and the United States Army.
