Col. (Ret.) Robert Edward Lee Michie lived from September 16, 1918 to December 30, 1998 as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Born in Bryan, TX to a Texas A&M professor, he later attended VMI and graduated from Texas Tech University before joining the United States Army Air Corps. He became a pilot and flew B-17s in the Pacific theatre during World War II where he met Ingeborg Dierking. While trying to escape from the Japanese invasion of Bandung, Indonesia he was forced to make an emergency landing and was captured by the Japanese. He survived being a POW for three and one-half years in various camps and countries. Upon his return to the United States he sent for Ingeborg and they were married in Austin, TX on August 22, 1946. During his United States Air Force career he was a Command Pilot for the Strategic Air Command (SAC) flying B-29s, B-47s, and B-52s. Additionally, he worked for the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon in the early sixties. He retired in 1967. He also worked for General Dynamics and Bell Helicopter in Fort Worth, Texas after retiring from the Air Force. He was admired by many throughout his life, but especially by his immediate family including his wife Ingeborg, his son, Robert Edward Lee Michie, Jr. (who also served in the Air Force) and his four grandchildren.
