    Col Smith began flying in 1947 at Dayton, OH. After graduating from Purdue University in 1959 and USAF Pilot Training (66-F) in 1966, he flew 234 missions in Vietnam in the F-4C/D Phantom jet fighter. After Vietnam, he was flight test director for the television guided Maverick missile. In 1972, at Edwards AFB, CA, he was project pilot and engineer for the AN/UPD-4 radar for the RF-4C. During 1976-79, he initiated the AMRAAM missile and the AIM/9M Sidewinder missile programs. In 1983, he was the Program Manager for the SP-100 Space Nuclear Power System. He established the Air Defense Initiative in 1986 and retired from the USAF in January 1988. He now flies the Cessna 172R.
