Col. Haywood was born 24 October 1920 in Raleigh, N.C. He was in Member Class 43-P. During WWII served with 302 Fighter Squadron, 332 Fighter Group. He tallied 70 combat missions, 356 combat hours. He accrued 29 years of service, served in three wars, and accrued 6000+ flying hours, mostly in fighters.

Col. Haywood served as Director of Operations and Training. He was also Director of Safety, Deputy Director for Operations, and Squadron Commander. He Served in Chitose, Johnson, and Yokota, Japan; Clark AFB, Philippines, and Saigon, Vietnam.

Medals earned: Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 4 oak leaf clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal, 0utstanding Unit Award, Euro-Africa-Middle Eastern Champaign Medal with 3 battle stars, Korean and Vietnam service medals, AF Longevity Service Ribbon with 5 oak leaf clusters.
