    Born and raised in Northern Virginia, Colonel Ulsh began flying in 1978 while a student at Florida Institute of Technology. Upon graduation in 1981, he had already earned his commercial pilot's license with instrument and multi-engine ratings in airplanes, and was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the US Army. Shortly thereafter, he completed his helicopter flight training in the UH 60 Blackhawk at Ft Rucker, Alabama. During the first ten years of his Army career, his flying and leadership assignments included the 101st Airborne Division, 128th Aviation Company, in Korea, and the 82d Airborne Division. While commanding A Company, 2nd Battalion, 82d Aviation Regiment, he participated in the only combat action of his career, Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in the Persian Gulf. His follow on assignments were in the field of research, development and acquisition. They included training with industry at Hughes Aircraft Company, El Segundo, California; Aviation Test Officer, and Operations Officer at the US Army Cold Regions Test Center at Ft Greely, Alaska; Aviation Systems Coordinator on the Army Staff, Pentagon; Assistant Defense Attaché for Defense Cooperation at the US Embassy in Paris, France; and Commander of the Defense Contract Management Agency - Raytheon, near Boston. Colonel Ulsh and his wife Natasha have two children, Alexandra and John Robert (Jack).
