    John joined the Army Air Corps in 1940. He went into communications as a radio operator. He was stationed at Boiling Field. He was assigned as a radio operator on Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson's plane. On the Secretary's retirement, he asked for assignment to Rio de Janero, Brazil. His assignment there was on one of the embassy planes. Before leaving Rio, was informed that they were recommending him for promotion to 2nd Lieutenant which was approved in 1952. He retired as a Colonel in 1973 after 33 years.
