    Dr. Henry J. Smith, 1928-1983
    Henry smith obtained his Ph.D. degree in Astronomy at Harvard University in 1955. He had served as Superintendent of the Boyden Station of the Harvard College Observatory in South Africa 1952-1954. From 1955 to 1963 he directed the Solar Activity Patrol at the Sacramento Peak Observatory in New Mexico and conducted research in solar activity. This research was published in numerous publications and culminated in the book, "Solar Flares", co-authored with his wife, Elske v.P. Smith, also an astronomer.
    At NASA from 1963-1975, Henry started as Chief of the Solar Physics Program and advanced to Deputy Director of Physics and Astronomy and finally as Deputy Associate Administrator for Sciences and Applications. During this time he managed the supporting research and technology programs and the selection of investigations and experiments for space science payloads on the Apollo, Skylab, Explorer and Observatory satellites, sounding rockets, and Pioneer, Mariner and Viking planetary probes.
    From 1976 until his death in 1983, Henry Smith was a member of the Combat Support Systems Directorate in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Research, Development and Acquisition (ODCSRDA) of the Department of the Army.
