    Dr. Silveira spent 36 years with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) from 1951 to 1987.

    He participated in every manned space program from Mercury to the space station. He was the deputy project manager for the Space Shuttle Orbiter Project, 1969 to 1982.

    He served as the NASA chief engineer until his retirement in 1987. After retiring he was the technical advisor to the director, Missile Defense Program, Office of the Secretary of Defense.

    He died in 2013.
