    Dr. Otto Herbert Schmitt, 1913-1998, was Professor of Biophysics at the University of MN. He was supervising engineer for the National Defense Research Committee in the development of the Magnetic Anomaly Detector used by PBY aircraft to detect submarines in WW II. He chaired the armed forces National Research Council Bioastronautics Committee from 1958 to 1961. The urgent early years of the Space Race.
