During World War II he served in the Army Air Force in the China-Burma-India theater and the Marianas with General LeMay's B-29 Group.
He witnessed the signing of the surrender ceremony aboard the battleship Missouri. He was also with the first party of officers sent in 1945 to inspect atomic bomb damage in Hiroshima, a month after it was attacked.
