On April 12th, 2010, I worked a trip with Captain Ed Solek going from Charlotte to Paris. Shortly after we coasted out over the Atlantic, we lost one of our navigational systems. I thought that we would have to turn back. Ed and I looked at the manual for limitations and solutions as we pressed on. Ed consulted with dispatch and we were able to recover a backup navigation system, and we continued onto our destination safely.
While in Paris, Eyjafjallajökull, a volcano on the Eastern Volcanic Zone in southern Iceland, began to erupt on 14 April 2010. We were 'stuck' in Paris as the tracks over the Atlantic were closed for the next week. During that week I had a great time with Ed visiting various museums and restaurants. I quickly noted that at the cafes, a glass of Coke was 4 Euros and a glass of wine was 3 Euros and adjusted my choice of beverage. We would meet in the evening for dinner, and if our replacement aircraft was not coming in, then we would make plans for the next day.
All the while Ed kept in contact with the company. He also kept the entire crew informed and handled the issues that arose from the crew of 12. It was a pleasure to work with Ed as he took care of the crew and passengers while in flight, then the crew on the ground.
