    Fredrick was an aeronautical engineer in the aerodynamics department at Douglas Aircraft (later McDonnell Douglas) from 1965 to 1977 prior to his extended career in education. While at McDonnell Douglas he participated in aerodynamic drag studies and analysis for various models of the DC-9 and DC-10 aircraft and was involved in the aerodynamic design and analysis for the YC-15 prototype aircraft which was the predecessor for the Air Force C-17 Globemaster Transport. His work included being the Principal Investigator for the initial YC-15 Air Force winglet design/analysis study which led to their incorporation into the Globemaster production configuration.
