On that date, Major Henery was Mission Commander for an emergency rescue mission southwest of Khe Sanh, South Vietnam. While leading the flight of two CH-3 helicopters through low hanging clouds over a large concentration of hostile forces he, while protecting his wing-man, was shot down by withering ground fire end through outstanding skill he was able to effect a semi-controlled crash, saving the lives of his crew. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Major Henery reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
