During World War II I flew 67 combat missions with the 353rd Fighter Group, 350th Squadron, 8th Air Force over Europe, flying P-47 Thunderbolts, then P-51 Mustangs. I earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, six Air Medals, the Presidential Unit Citation, and the European theater of operations ribbon with three battle stars. I was credited with two German aircraft destroyed, and one probably destroyed. I escorted bombers and dive bombed and strafed targets.
