    Howard J. Heindel was born in Oil City, PA in 1896. He became interested in flying when he saw Lincoln Beachey land on the old Driving Park gronds, East Ferry Street. 3 years later he became employed by Curtiss Airplane,
    Hammondsport, N.Y. He soloed in 1915 at Newport News, Va. in an old Jn-4. He was Project Engineer for Curtiss Airplane Company on construction of the NC-4 flying boat built for the U.S. Navy and the first airplane to
    span the Atlantic Ocean. He was duly elected to be a member of the "Early Birds", on August, 1929; an organization of pioneers who flew before December 17, 1916.
