    Born in Winston-Salem, NC in 1932, Mr. Gilbert learned to fly after serving in the Coast Guard during the Korean conflict.

    After working as a flight instructor in general aviation, he was eventually hired as a flight steward by Piedmont Airlines. He quickly moved into a pilot position in 1953. He remained with Piedmont until his retirement in 1973. As a senior captain, he piloted the DC-3, Martin 404, YS-11, and FH-227 passenger aircraft.

    He passed away in 1990 at the age of 57.
