AWARD OF THE DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS
SHEORN, JAMES D WARRANT OFFICER WO-1 United States Army HEADQUARTERS
AND HEADQUARTERS BATTERY, 2D BATTALION, 35TH ARTILLERY, APO 96376 (ATTACHED TO
    23D ARTILLERY GROUP AVIATION)
    Awarded: Distinguished Flying Cross
Date of services 29 March 1970
    Theater: Republic of Vietnam
Reason: Warrant Officer Sheorn distinguished himself on 29 March 1970 by heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a pilot with the 2d Battalion, 12th Artillery, in the Republic of±' Vietnam. On the above date, Warrant Officer Sheorn was responsible for flying battalion command personnel to Fire Support Base Jay, which was under heavy rocket, mortar and ground attacks by North Vietnamese Army forces. Upon landing at the fire support base, Warrant Officer Sheorn volunteered to evacuate wounded personnel to medical facilities. Each departure and landing was subjected to intense small arms and automatic weapons fire. However, his complete disregard for his own safety and his professional assessment of the enemy situation made flight to and from the fire support base possible and provided wounded personnel with fast medical treatment. Later in the day, Fire Support Base Jay again came under intense mortar fire, ./arrant Officer Sheorn voluntarily flew in search of the enemy position. Ho was required to fly at dangerously low altitudes and extremely slew air speeds to accomplish his mission of directing counter-mortar fire on the enemy position. He completed this mission in an exemplary manner, thereby silencing the enemy mortars. Warrant Officer Sheorn's actions were in keeping with, the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army. Authority: By direction of the President under the provisions of the Act of Congress, approved 2 July 1926.
