    Warrant Officer McCollum was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. On 21 Feb 1969, while serving as Aircraft Commander of a medical evacuation helicopter, Warrant Officer McCollum volunteered to evacuate a wounded North Vietnamese soldier. While on approach to a hot LZ in bad weather, the aircraft came upon heavy anti-aircraft fire and was badly shot up. Warrant officer McCollum received a bullet wound to the leg. The co-pilot was wounded and the medic was mortally wounded. Warrant Officer McCollum was able to fly the aircraft back to Qui Nhon.
