Honored by:
Mr. John H. Lienhard IV

1st Lt John H. Lienhard III (1893-1979) joined the US Army Air service in 1917. He trained at Lake Charles Army Airfield in Louisiana in Curtiss Jennies.

He arrived in France and was assigned to the 184th Night Pursuit Squadron - the first such unit. The war ended before he flew in combat. During his time in France he flew the Thomas Morse, both the Sopwith Pup and Sopwith Camel, the Nieuport 17, the Spad, and perhaps others as well. He was discharged in 1919.

After the war he worked as a newspaperman, and later editor, on the Fargo Forum, the Chicago Tribune, and the St. Paul Dispatch and Pioneer Press. But his first love was always action and the outdoors. He tired of newspapers and, at the age of 57, he took up surveying. He was 72 when he retired as Deputy County Surveyor of Multnomah County in Portland Oregon.
