    John acquired private pilot's license at age 16, followed by single engine land, single engine sea, multi engine both land and sea and instructor rating licenses. At age 19, he acquired his instrument rating. At age 20, he flew right seat in a Douglas Sky Train DC-3 for Wisconsin Central Airlines.

    Serving in the U.S. Air Force, he was sent to Korea and flew 100 missions in the RF-80 Shooting Star jet fighter. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and two Air Medals. He left with a rank of first lieutenant.

    After leaving active duty with the Air Force, he flew corporate aircraft for the Gal-breath Co. for approx. four years and the Anchor Hocking Glass Corporation for approximately 15 yrs. He held numerous ratings including the ATR (air transport rating) and A&P (air frame & power rating).
